DIY: Home Made Laundry Soap

I have researched a million of these homemade laundry powder recipes! I came up with my own and I am loving the results.

I paid under $20 for all the ingredients! It took roughly an hour to make and it will last approximately 8 months if we wash 5 loads a week (using 2 tablespoons a load). I will use 1 tablespoon for smaller loads and some weeks we don't have as many loads to wash. Exciting if you're  looking for ways to save money! Hoping this lasts a year... I will have to wait and see.

I have used All Free & Clear Pods in our household for awhile now because I have sensitive skin and we have a new baby with new baby skin! I like this homemade recipe much more! Our clothes feel cleaner and smell better. A light and fresh scent. It's wonderful! You can add Downy Crystals or any other scent booster to this if you want a stronger smell. We use them but not on the baby's clothes so I decided to leave it on the side.

This recipe doesn't call for Borax which can be harsh on skin. It really isn't necessary.

You'll need:
A large container
A large spoon
A large bowl
A grater
1- 55oz box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
4- 1lb boxes of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (I couldn't find a 4lb box at my store)
1-3lb container of Oxi Clean Stain Remover (this is optional if you have super sensitive skin)
3- Bar soaps of your choice

I chose this soap because I've heard great things about all natural "Castile" soap & I loved the fresh linen scent!

I made it in 1/3 sections to make it easier to mix together! I grated 1 bar of soap in a large bowl, added a third of each ingredient and mixed thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Emptied each section in a glass, air tight container. Then stirred some more for good measure.

Tips on grating the soap:
I suggest a rotary grater like the one pictured. It didn't get clogged! It also made the soap very fine so it won't clump and dissolves well. This still gave my hands quite a work out so I'm glad I didn't use a regular grater. I've read about the soap not being fine enough with standard graters and people using food processors to grade it down further. I would mix in baking soda in the processor if you do this. It'll mix better! I also read that if you cut the soap up and microwave it for one minute that it will crumble very easily but I did not try that method.

I broke the soap up into pieces & it worked great!

1-2 tablespoons for each load! Depending on load size and how dirty the load is! Amazing right?! Regular detergent is mostly fillers which equals more chemical exposure! And more wasting money!

I use a formula scoop to measure! It holds 2 tbsp & has a line to indicate half full!

It works well in cold or hot water. I wash all loads with cold water except for towels. I don't have an HE washing machine but I've heard you can use this in them. I would research it further before doing that though! I will start to run a hot water wash with a cup of vinegar to resolve any build up. I do this in my dish washer, humidifier and bottle warmer/pacifier sterilizer as well. I should have been doing this in my washing machine before now because of the residue from all the chemicals in store detergent!

Happy Laundering!

I made this cute sticker for the glass container! Fits perfectly in my laundry closet!
